The first step in owning your goals

Recently, I made a blog post about realistically setting goals. But, I missed an important step in that process.

The real first step in moving forward and working toward your goals is accepting yourself. Knowing your truths is the key that will open up your journey of self-improvement.

When I worked on goal setting, I did reflect on what made me happy and what I wanted out of life. I didn’t think about who I was, fundamentally. It may seem like a minute difference, still I think avoiding that conversation with myself has stopped me from progressing on my goals as much as I would’ve liked.

So, how do you know your truth? Let’s be clear– this is a lifelong process. It can and will probably change as your life changes. It’s helpful to check in with yourself, though. This way you can be live more honestly.

Here’s what I did to really reflect on myself: I thought about and wrote down the major aspects of my life. Then I wrote down what I’m doing to improve or address them. Then I wrote down what I feel about them.

For example, one aspect was creativity. I wrote that I am making this blog to fulfill that aspect, and I wrote that my truth is I’m a writer and need to make my ideas known.

Unsure what the major aspects of your life are? I drew some inspiration from the labeling of chakras (spirituality, awareness, communication, love/healing, wisdom/power, sexuality/creativity, and basic trust). You could also add aspects like work, school, or family. Just do whatever feels right to you!

Something I learned: A lovely quote is: “Don’t surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn’t true anymore.” By Cheryl Strayed.

Wonder #55- Quotes. Sayings from other people can motivate us, inspire us, and uplift us. They mean a lot in a neat little package.

Editor’s Note: Wonders is a series that is now discontinued from 2018. It examined the many wonders of the world.
